Uranus, the Great Awakener, enters Gemini on July 7th!
Uranus is the planet of autonomy, innovation, and disruption, but often leaves enlightenment in its wake.
Gemini, ruled by Mercury, has everything to do with information, data, communication, abstraction, curiosity, games, and trickery. It also tends to quicken the pace of planets.
This quick nature makes Gemini detached at times. It’s certainly a fun sign, but it can also be a place in our charts where we let our curiosity sweep us away before we have a firm understanding of what we’re getting ourselves into. We can wind up wondering what we were thinking later when we’re met with the consequences. Gemini can have a bit of a Fool’s Gold effect in this way.
So that’s obviously going to have some interesting implications as Uranus, known for disruption and unpredictability, takes on those Gemini characteristics.
And there’s a lot that needs waking up to– another one of Uranus’s specialties– as far as the sign of Gemini is concerned.
Why’s that you ask?
Because Pluto and Neptune, the other two outer planets– in fact the two outermost planets, had their last conjunction in Gemini in 1891. That means the cycle between them that we’re in now is heavily Gemini themed.
Uranus disrupts, Neptune dissolves, “and Pluto brings the hammer” in the words of the great Richard Tarnas, astrologer and author of Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View. Pluto represents ego death, major transformations, and sources of power controlling us from beyond our awareness, such as our subconscious, an algorithm, deceptive marketing tactics, or a covert propaganda campaign.
Neptune is our imagination for better or for worse, it deals in the world of dreams, fantasy, escapism, and illusion.
This cycle of theirs that we’ve been living in has been extremely elusive, and extremely dark. As I explain in depth in this video, Sigmund Freud’s career was in full swing at the point it seeded, putting an emphasis on the depths of the psyche.
Around the time of the conjunction Freud’s nephew, Edward Bernays was born. Bernays would become extremely emblematic of what this cycle represents. He’s known as “The Father of Public Relations,” and he’s made a profoundly controversial impact on all of our daily lives. But true to Pluto and Neptune, the sisters of darkness, that influence has been covert— covertly pervasive.
His uncle had a big influence on him. Bernays taught our government and many large corporations like food and cigarette companies how to manipulate the psychology of targeted demographics within populations to get them to do whatever they wanted: like go fight in wars, hand over cash to fund said wars, smoke cigarettes, or eat certain foods, whether or not there was actually any nutritional benefit. Coincidentally the day I wrote the script for this video Texas proposed a bill stating Doritos, Skittles, and Mountain Dew have to have the label “Not Recommend For Human Consumption” on their packaging moving forward– after decades of sales with no such warning.
We’re going to be seeing a lot more of that during Uranus’s time in Gemini, mark my words.
So while this won’t be an easy transit, we should all be hopeful that Uranus’s inclination toward disruption and enlightenment might be a welcomed breath of fresh air from this deceptive, devious underlying Pluto-Neptune cycle that’s been undermining the quality of all of our lives.
We can see Bernays’s influence all over our modern culture, used in manipulative marketing tactics and political agendas across the globe.
Just look at the skincare/anti-aging industry, speaking of Gemini and the mask we wear. Modern culture operates under an illusion that it’s normal for women to dread the natural aging process, and that it’s healthy for us all to sexualize an absurd ideal of eternal youth. Most skin creams are not in fact “clinically proven to reduce wrinkles,” but they know if they say so you’ll buy it, and there’s nobody regulating whether or not those claims are true.
Similarly Botox might be FDA-approved and pushed by many, many medical professionals without warning, but it’s not without extreme consequences. It’s similar to the consequences doctors never think to warn women about when prescribing hormonal birth control. Botox freezes the muscles of your face, right? Those muscles give important feedback to your brain to help IT understand how YOU feel about things. If your muscles don’t move, your brain thinks you don’t care about things that you actually should.
Similarly, birth control completely changes women’s hormones, which changes their personalities, and the type of person they’re attracted to. Think about that. You marry a guy while on birth control, then you go off of it for the first time in perhaps decades to have kids, and suddenly it’s like you don’t know why you married this person or what you did to your life, and things fall apart. Of course birth control isn’t the only reason to blame for this common occurrence, but it is a factor, one that nobody warns young people about.
Remember that the twins we affiliate Gemini with were actually two sets of twins from the myth of Castor and Pollux. They had sisters– there was a boy and a girl set of God twins, and a boy and girl set of human twins. One of the things this teaches us about the sign of Gemini is just how many different perspectives and ways of looking at an issue there can be, rather than simply taking things on their face, or in black and white terms.
On the topic of gender, I know men are in a tough time, at least here in the US, and I have all the empathy in the world for you guys. The pain you’re going through has impacted people I love, and me by default. Much of it stems back to the deceptive nature of this Pluto-Neptune cycle in Gemini from what I can tell.
I believe women are struggling just as severely– only, society rewards us for completely betraying our bodies and our true selves. I know a lot of women personally who have great lives on paper, but who’s health, mental health, relationships, and overall quality of life aren’t anything to be envious of in reality. I’m sure you know someone who fits that description as well.
I have Uranus in my first house in my progressed chart currently, which is partly why I keep showing up with my grey hairs and signs of natural aging. That’s very intentional, because we need to disrupt this status quo. It’s not sustainable, good for our culture, or the generations of young women looking up to us to continue to glorify these trends and the hollow lifestyle they lead to. It’s very true to Pluto and Neptune’s cycle in Gemini, dangerously deceptive.
In fact Bernays’ died wishing he’d made the field of PR require a license like we require to practicing medicine or law– because it’s so powerful, and so dangerous in the wrong hands. This is why it feels like grifters are everywhere, that for many of us our hard-earned dollars go nowhere, and that politicians and corporations are observably unempathetic, unethical, and disappointing.
We’ve all been conned hard for a long time, explained by this cycle between the sisters of darkness seeded in Gemini.
So bring on Uranus! In the words of the great Tom Brady, who’s got his Mars and Jupiter in Gemini, “LET’S GO!”
Gemini is a mutable sign, meaning it falls at a point in the year in the northern hemisphere that oversees a mutation from one season to the next.
As with any mutable sign in our charts, Gemini asks us to be flexible and adaptable. It’s a curious sign that wants to learn, but potentially only as much as it needs to to serve its agenda before moving on to the next thing intriguing its curiosity.
Which sounds a lot like the attention span of a lot of the population these days, right? Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness, talks about a new extremely Gemini-esque phenomena he calls “Attention Fragmentation.” He’s observed the potential for this particularly in the younger generations, but it’s the kind of thing we’ll all want to be mindful of during Uranus’s transit through Gemini, especially those of us who spend a lot of time in front of screens.
I really like Haidt’s work, and I agree that this technology and social media driven phenomena is having worrisome implications, but there’s obviously been some evolutionary advantages as well. While a lot of our youth are struggling for good reason, there are signs of incredible brilliance and capability in them as well.
Take Matteo Paz for example, a California teen who discovered a whole class of previously unidentified objects in space using an algorithm!
Linda Pistun is another fun, hope-inspiring example. She’s 12 and a published author. Her book is about carbon footprints, hoping to inspire other kids to grow up leading environmentally conscious lives, and that’s just scratching the surface of her passion, demonstrative intelligence, and capability.
As challenging as we’ve made it for them by putting smartphones in their hands and giving the likes of Mark Zuckerberg full access to their psyches at a tender age– obviously there’s still plenty of reason to have confidence in our younger generations and hope for their future.
I offer these examples to inspire hope for the future, but also because these young people exemplify the remedy to the lower expression of Gemini, particularly considering the Pluto-Neptune cycle’s influence.
Especially while Uranus is there, the way to get the best of Gemini is to let its curiosity and whimsy inspire us, making the learning, exploration, discovery, and teaching processes fun.
However, there’s a frivolity to Gemini if we’re not careful, because it’s the last sign in the procession of the zodiac before we hit any water, the element that attaches us emotionally to the world around us. Gemini is a point in our maturation process that teaches, often in hindsight, why it’s necessary to question the appearance of things and probe beyond the surface.
Just like Matteo Paz! He looked at space and thought, ‘I bet there’s more than meets the eye. Let me use an algorithm to find a whole class of bodies that aren’t visible by telescope for this high school science competition I have coming up!’
And I think that’s the rub– the dark underbelly of the Pluto-Neptune cycle. These vicious tactics used by companies to sell us junk that isn’t good for us, algorithms that prey on our worst impulses, and politicians claiming they have our best interest at heart while accepting money from Super PACs and lobbyists in the understanding that they’ll push their agendas over ours— the people they’re supposed to serve. They’ve only been able to get away with this historically because the general public was defenseless against it for so long. We had no vehicle to see beyond the surface appearance of things— until now. Now our species has access to this incredible communication tool that we call the world wide web.
Could an era of transparency and accountability be upon us now, finally, as a result?
The internet is very higher expression Gemini– also Uranian– in that it enables us to educate one another. When I learned who Edward Bernays was and that he was born right as Pluto and Neptune were meeting in their conjunction in Gemini, I thought ‘holy sh*t.’ I may have a pretty humble reach on social media, but I have an obligation to educate as many people who’re willing to listen as I can.
That’s really the task at hand for the next 8 years. Uranus will be trine Pluto in Aquarius. Aquarius is all about the team effort, community coming together to build a better future.
And they’re forming a mini grand trine with Saturn and Neptune in the middle in Aries, sextiling both. Saturn and Neptune’s cycles have everything to do with popular uprisings and the working class. The common man, the bulk of the population have risen up against the elite time and time again in correlation with Saturn and Neptune’s cycles throughout history. I have several videos on that topic on my channel because it will undoubtedly be a big theme as Saturn and Neptune close out one 36 year cycle between now and when they seed a new one in February 2026— at the most potent point in the entire zodiac. You can check those out here if you haven’t already.
So during this Uranus transit, you want to be on the lookout for whatever piece of the puzzle you might have that can help, or whatever efforts or talents you can put forth to help shape a better future as modern technology and AI change the nature of how we connect and the way the world is organized– especially as jobs potentially continue to disappear. Many of us are going to need to get creative and scrappy while trusting the opportunities will arise, as long as we stay curious and keep probing beyond the surface of things.
You might have already read this article or watched this video comparing our current astrological weather to the period when Western Rome fell. That was when Europe as we know it began to shift from a sprawling, pagan, farmer-populated empire to a predominantly Christian, monarch-led, and increasingly urban group of nation states.
I’m hopeful and there are astrological indicators that it’ll go better for us than it did for the common people during that period of time. That unfortunately led to the Dark Ages.
I think we are headed for a highly unpredictable, but brighter age.
Uranus requires flexibility and adaptability just like the sign of Gemini does, and I think the innovation and ingenuity Uranus brings will be an incredible asset. That is, if we can remember to stay confident in our abilities and empowered through all of the change Uranus will inevitably bring as well.
Uranus in particular encourages us to bear in mind one of astrology’s most humbling lessons: that often what we consider “right,” “good,” or what’s supposed to be and not supposed to be, is just our perception, which isn’t always in alignment with the Universe’s working order and the grander scheme of things.
I’m a Pluto in Scorpio. The good news for the bulk of us Millenials here is. that it’s the end of our Uranus- Pluto opposition. Uranus in Taurus has been opposing all of our natal Pluto’s in Scorpio, putting most of the Millenials in the throws of this massive coming of age transit since 2018.
Gen Z, the bulk of you with your Pluto’s in Sagittarius, you’re up next!
But to demonstrate my point about astrology aligning with the Universe’s plans, regardless of what we think we want or how things should go– particularly when it comes to Uranus— I can give you a concrete example from my own life.
Before 2018 I’d been working in restaurants for over a decade. I have a culinary arts degree, and my masters in food and wine. The direction my life was headed was right on brand for my Venus conjunct my North Node in Taurus, and my entire sense of self was wrapped up in it. My career and the lifestyle that went with it were the only ways I knew how to define myself.
Then Uranus entered Taurus in 2018 and my relationship with alcohol went from bad to worse. Then quarantine hit, and the break from the restaurant lifestyle helped me get sober. Suddenly I was painfully aware there was no going back. Then when the Nodes hit the Scorpio-Taurus axis as well putting me in my nodal return, I learned I’d been using alcohol to cope with undiagnosed autism. I started offering tarot and birth chart readings online out of sheer desperation for cash, and here we are.
Point being, I was sure my career and life would continue to go one way, but Uranus and the Universe had other plans. Uranus totally upended life as I knew it, forcing me to innovate and find the autonomy I’d always been seeking in places I’d have never thought in a million years to go looking.
That’s how Uranus rolls, and so I encourage you all to keep an open-mind. Those were angular houses for me, I’m a Scorpio rising with a lot of planets on that axis, and obviously it overlapped with my nodal return, so I got hit particularly hard. Uranus doesn’t always operate so dramatically, but it certainly can, and either way, you want to keep an open mind.
If you head over to YouTube, I talk about the house in your chart that Uranus is entering in your horoscope. But you want to take note if the mutable cross makes up your angular houses – 1, 4, 7, and 10. If so, this will be a particularly noticeable transit. The same goes if you have prominent placements in these houses, like your Sun or your Moon.
Most of us will be experiencing some sort of outer planet, transpersonal aspect with Uranus as well. As I mentioned, the bulk of Gen Z will experience their natla Pluto opposition while Uranus is in Gemini. Many alive now also have Neptune and Uranus in Sagittarius so Uranus will be opposing those by transit as well. A lot of you Boomer’s have your Neptune in Virgo, so that will be aspected by square. And much of Gen X will feel Uranus by trine to their Pluto’s in Libra.
We also have several countries with their natal Uranus in Gemini who’ll be in their Uranus return, including the United States, Israel, and many more: all of the countries that were formed in the wake of WWII, the last time Uranus was in Gemini.
Here in the US, we also have Mars in Gemini, and it’s an angular house for us– our 7th. So, we can expect US global relations to continue to go through significant changes, and I would bet this has heavy implications for the country's relationship with its citizens as well. You don’t really need a crystal ball to see that coming down the pike.
So we’ll see. For the last several years when clients have come to me feeling lost in their careers, I’ve been looking at this massive transition looming and advising to ‘just wait.’ Wait, and watch for the opening on the horizon that you never imagined you’d be so uniquely equipped to fill. None of us know exactly what any of this is going to look like, how much AI will be taking over the workforce, etc. But what you can do to prepare is pursue your hobbies and your interests. Get to know who you are and what need people have out there that you can fill. That might be some role that already exists like the trades or healthcare for example– roles we need people in that can’t be replaced by AI.
For others it might look more like what I had to do. When I realized I was not hirable in a complex social setting anymore, I deleted my personal social media accounts and started using these platforms as opportunities to market my business instead. I know that path won’t be for everybody, but I recommend it. I have a much healthier relationship with social media now as a result.
YouTube in particular is a trip. I have an extreme love-hate relationship with it, the latter only because it’s one of those massive tech companies that started out completely focused on the user experience, but at some point in recent years shifted their priorities to keeping investors happy. They don’t admit that, but you guys know, you’ve seen the ad structure changes over the last couple of years. We can expect to see that bubble burst during this transit– YouTube, Uber, Lyft, Instagram, TikTok– they got us all hooked under one way of operating their businesses and then they changed their models in favor of profit, confident they had us hooked. At some point consumer protections will get involved through European efforts, or who knows. But all of it is subject to change during Uranus’s time in Gemini, trine Pluto in Aquarius.
If you’re a creative or have some other type of service you could be marketing, and you aren’t already shamelessly comfortable using these tools like I’ve had to become, now's a good time to start practicing and observing the trends. I would honestly encourage anyone to start a YouTube channel– don’t expect to make much money off of it for the first several years, if ever. But the personal journey it takes you on is absolutely wild. Especially for those of you who have strong Leo in your chart— it’s worth a try if it’s ever crossed your mind.
This will be a great period of time to learn about and pay attention to the tech frontier, because it’s just a part of all of our lives now. While there does appear to be a trend of computer science and programmer jobs being replaced by AI, in my opinion, it’s a literacy worth investing your time in developing. There are tons of free resources out there to get started like The Odin Project and Free Code Camp, so if you have the time and could use a healthy hobby, why not?
Lastly I just want to re-iterate what a powerful period of time this will be for the bulk of Gen Z out there. They’re going to feel this transit the most, while also going through their Saturn returns in waves. That’s a double dose of being thrust into the adult world or out of the familiar and comfortable. Sagittarius is easily inspired to action, that’s one of the best things about this generation, but it’s also the thing they’ll really need to be mindful of and learn how to harness. That’s exactly what Uranus opposing their Pluto’s in Sagittarius, especially overlapping with your Saturn return’s is going to do for them. We should all make our best efforts to support them through the process. A lot is being asked of them.
If you are from the Pluto in Sagittarius generation, I’m offering a special discount for you because I know a lot of you are struggling to find work and with cost of living, which is undoubtedly part of the theme here for you.
